Formica In Depth Surfacing

We went with Formica In depth surfacing.  It's like Corian, but a different brand obviously.

Cons:
It's not very heat resistant.  The manufacture recommends using trivits.
Scratches easily.

Pros:
Do not have to seal it
Can sand out scratches with standard sand paper (or even bad stains)

So far, that's what I know about it.  I haven't really used it, so I cannot tell you yet if I love it or not.

The color we ended up going with was the River Rock Mosaic.

  1. I'm looking at the Bianco InDepth countertop, but I just found a complaint about it being a nightmare--scratching from something as simple as placing a cardboard box on it. I'm now reconsidering. Let me know if you think the InDepth scratches an abnormal amount for solid surface. Thanks.

  2. You know, I was recently at a friends house that has had it installed for a couple years. Were there scratches? Yes. However, I didn't notice until now, when I'm inspecting it like crazy. It's more like little micro scratches. Which, can even be buffed out a bit with the magic eraser, or fine grit sand paper. I didn't think it looked too bad and she hadn't touched it up. She chose a darker (almost black with gold flakes) color too.

  3. A little followup on the scratching issue. They certainly do scratch pretty easily. Easy to rub them out from what I have found, but still, if constant little scratches are going to drive you crazy, I'd probably go with something else.

  4. The lighter colors, like Bianco, probably don't show scratches as much as the darker colors. Every person that I've seen mention scratches also mentioned a dark color (or they didn't mention any color). The scratches are said to be white, too, which also makes me think the ligher colors might not show.

  5. We just installed the in-depth countertops and are not very pleased! Ours are a darker brown and they do show scratches--even from something like a cup--a plastic one!!! The scratches show up white which are very obvious. They do rub out, but who wants to treat their countertops with kid gloves and have to sand them once a week?? Lighter colors might be better, but no one that sold them to us mentioned that. We were just told that we shouldn't cut on the surface, but this surface is far more fragile than that.

  6. We just ordered in In-Depth in the Silk Perla color. I'm hoping we won't notice the scratches so much because of the lighter color. We are going from some ugly 80's laminate so I'm sure we will be happy either way. I heard another review that someone was told not to pour boiling water down the sink because it could crack. That I'm not too excited about. Was anyone else told this or had experiences with this?

  7. We installed in-depth two months ago....very upset with how easy it scratches....called and spoke with Formica tech who said "sure it will scratch if you put a ceramic bowl on it"....no one told me it would be that fragile. I would not buy it again, we have the olive silica, but scratches are white....i am afraid to use my kitchen countertop...that sucks
